Joe is a Charleston native and I’m from Chattanooga. We met at Rhodes College in Memphis, TN. We dated long distance for too long, eventually moved to Nashville, TN and lived there for 5 years before deciding to return to Joe’s hometown for the long term.
Joe is Safety Director at Cullum Constructors, Inc., a commercial mechanical contractor and I’m an Analyst in Public Finance for Morgan Keegan, an investment bank. We have an only dog, a Boston Terrier named Huey. As for Huey and the Miata, Huey seems to enjoy basking in the sun with the top down if it’s not too hot and we don’t drive too fast.
Joe and I are both car nuts and first looked into buying a Miata in 1997. Joe first test-drove a Miata for me (that whole driving a stick problem) while I was living in Memphis and we were dating long-distance with him in Charleston. Being used to hauling everything I owned in my first car, I just couldn’t justify having such a small car living by myself. I bought a 1994 Nissan 300Z 2+2 as a compromise. Shortly after purchasing the 300Z, we joined the Middle Tennessee Z Car Club and enjoyed the many social activities and drives.
We moved to Charleston in September 2002, and searched for another Z car club, but only found the Miata Club. One of these days… I still wanted my cute convertible.
In August 2006, we finally gave into our desires?? and bought a black 2002 Miata LS 6-spd with tan interior and a black top. We bought it in Charlotte after a short, but intense search where it seemed every Miata we went to test drive sold before we could get there. Now we ask why we didn’t get one sooner!
We still own the 300Z. Joe drives it to work most days and has recently started autocrossing it with the SCCA. The Miata will eventually make it to the autocross events, but currently, the 300Z is a more familiar racer. Yes, we do have a practical car, a 2004 Infiniti FX45 for the longer road trips and numerous home improvement projects.
