Deanna is originally from Indiana and David from Ohio. We met racing sailboats on Lake Erie, first competitors and later crew mates. We bought a C&C 38 sailboat together and after a few years of boat partnering decided we would be life partners. In 2001 we fulfilled a long time dream of David’s and left the USA on the C&C for an eighteen month cruise of the Eastern Caribbean. By the middle of the first winter we concluded that a) we weren’t ready to go back, and b) we didn’t ever want to spend another winter in Ohio. We sold the lakeside condo we had kept in Ohio and bought a more comfortable cruising boat, a Whitby 42.
Over a period of 5 years we traveled more than 30,000 miles by sailboat, visited all of the major islands of the eastern Caribbean, Venezuela, the ABC’s, some out islands of Columbia, Honduras, Belize and Guatemala. We knew we would have to eventually return to work to prepare for retirement and after 5 years we were ready for a change. We headed back to the States from Honduras and arrived in Charleston mid-May of 2006. David found a job with Charleston County Public Works within 6 weeks of arriving here and Deanna started her job in September. We decided we wanted to return to shore life so we bought a house and put the boat up for sale.
In Ohio convertibles are not very practical, so as soon as we got established here we bought our first convertible, a Chrysler Sebring. We thought we needed a four passenger vehicle but were not happy with the car. After the boat sold, we bought our Miata. The dealer we bought the car from, Lowcountry Mazda encouraged us to join the local Miata club and we did so a few weeks after buying the car.
