Hotel Reservations for Deal’s Gap XII

July 24th – 27th, 2008

RESERVE ROOMS QUICKLY!!!

The Lowcountry Miata Club has reserved 20 rooms at the Fontana Village Hotel and Resort. This is on Hwy.28, about 20 minutes from Ground Zero (Tapoco Lodge) and 20 minutes from Robbinsville (Grocery, fast food, car wash, etc). You will need to sign up for the Dragon Slayer’s club (can do when you call to reserve your room – BE SURE TO TELL THEM YOU WANT TO SIGN UP) to get the 15% discount on your room for the weekend. Rooms are Lodge Rooms, Two Queen beds, AC, Cable, HBO, Phone. No refrigerators (just like our other hotels). The rate for the rooms are $74.25 for Dragon Slayer members (Free, they just want your e-mail & address info) or $99 if you do not sign up for the Dragon Slayer Club. The reservation deadline date is April 15th, 2008. There is a $50 non-refundable fee if you cancel your room 30 days prior to arriving. After 30 days, NO REFUND of the first nights rent.

To reserve a room, call 1-828-498-2211 and ask for the rooms for Lowcountry Miata. Rooms not reserved by April 15th, 2008 (DEADLINE EXTENDED!) will go out to friends in the Miata world who are always looking for rooms late in the season. Rooms are normally booked a year or more in advance, so don’t think that you can wait until June to get a room, you’ll likely be staying 2 hours away. 500+ Miatas descend on the area for this weekend so rooms, restaurants and every available space is taken over by Miatas. Don’t wait to get your rooms, if you know you are going, get your rooms NOW. These rooms are for Thursday 24th – Sunday the 27th. You can reserve for less days if needed, just tell them when you call. I am not sure if you will be able to reserve for more days than those listed, but you can ask if they are available if you want to go early.

Once you have called to reserve your room, please contact Bunny and let her know you are going. She will keep a list of all members going, when they are going up and how long they are staying. Normally we leave early Thursday morning (8ish) and head up so if you want to be included in the caravan, please let me know when you intend on leaving. Bob and I have been going for about 9-10 years now, and we have a lot of runs we tend to do each year. The reason we do the same things each year – well, we’ve never taken a group up that didn’t have a ball with the runs we do for the weekend, so we continue to do them. We do a lot of driving, near 1000 miles or more for the weekend. As we get closer to the date, I’ll release a detailed itinerary for everyone who is going. You can stick with the group or you can go off on your own. There isn’t a ton of stuff to do in the area surrounding Deal’s Gap, but an hour in any direction will take you to tons of things to do should you wish to do them.

This year, some of us are staying in the Cottages at Fontana Village. We will also be trying out a few new things this year, which is possible meals at the hotel. The cottages have full kitchens in them and 4 members of our group were able to get them. Since we all can cook in our cottages, we figured why not try dinner in at least one night, maybe two. Again, as we get closer to the date, we’ll figure all this stuff out. The reason for looking into doing dinners at the hotel is because it is getting increasingly harder with our large group to find places to eat. Saturday night we will do our traditional ending run through Wayah Rd. and Fat Buddies run, but Thursday and Friday, we may try to eat at “home”.

Some of our runs include the Dragon of course, usually on Thursday to avoid all the traffic that will quickly come in on Friday and Saturday, the Cherohala Skyway to the highest point in the area, lunch in Tellico Plains, the big photo shoot at the Fontana Dam, a visit to the Lodge, and our traditional run down Wayah Rd to Fat Buddies BBQ, which most will say is actually the most intense run of the weekend, although it’s great and a beautiful ride. During the evenings we will gather at one or more of the cottages and hang out and chat and drink (BYOB – it’s basically a dry town, although I think you can buy beer locally now). So you see we do a lot of driving. I try not to run you too hard, and not to make anyone get up before 6am <BG>. Just call me Trip Nazi Jr. It’ll be worth every minute of it though and anyone who has gone has come back with a smile on their face.
